Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Since she was the only child She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott studied at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation her school, she went to Temple University. She took secondary school classes the course of two years while also working. She hoped she would become an English high school teacher. However, she was not able to achieve this dream when, after completing three years of study while working as a teacher assistant, she left college. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist and performing during poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. At the Roots show she came out in the spotlight as an artist. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained performance experience through the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
